City Supports Overnight Warming Centre at Energy Court
Nov 22, 2024
People experiencing homelessness can access additional services at a new overnight warming centre, located at 24 Energy Court in downtown Sudbury.
The centre is set to open its doors on Monday, November 25. It will offer a safe, comfortable, warm place for people to visit, with access to washrooms, drinks and snacks as well as support and connection to housing-focused services.
“City Council is steadfast in its commitment to addressing homelessness, including ensuring access to shelter, washrooms, food and critical support services that make a real difference in people’s lives, especially during the colder months,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “The City is grateful for the collaborative response we’ve received from our community partners, who play a vital role in helping us meet the needs of our most vulnerable residents.”
Through $508,000 in funding from the City, the Go-Give Project will operate the warming centre seven nights a week, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., until the end of April. The centre has capacity for 50 people.
"Through careful planning and training we are committed to providing a safe and welcoming space for both our community members and staff,” said Evie Ali, Go-Give Project Executive Director. “By equipping our team with the skills and knowledge they need to address challenges and overcome obstacles, it is our hope to take this opportunity to increase awareness surrounding other community resources while continuing to promote the Go-Give Project values: Safety, Respect, Equality, Compassion and Understanding."
This warming centre is part of a housing-focused system of services for people experiencing homelessness, funded through the City, including outreach, client navigation, emergency shelters, housing first programs and transitional housing.
