City of Greater Sudbury Implements Gate Fee at all Greater Sudbury Landfills
Jun 26, 2024
Beginning July 1, 2024, a $5 gate fee will be applied to every vehicle load entering Greater Sudbury landfills and the Walden Small Vehicle Transfer Station, in addition to regular tipping fees. The gate fee was approved as part of the City’s 2024/25 budget.
This initiative aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and landfill wait times by discouraging unnecessary visits to the landfill sites. It also aims to promote responsible waste management practices by encouraging waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting efforts within our community.
Residents can avoid landfill visits by making the most of reducing, reusing and recycling. Many items that are brought to the landfill for disposal can be collected as part of existing roadside collection programs such as Green Cart, Blue Box, leaf and yard trimmings, and large furniture, appliances and electronics collection. The City also offers special support programs for diaper, medical and pet waste. Alternatively, try backyard composting or reusing by selling or donating items.
Through individual producer responsibility programs, there are a number of locations in Greater Sudbury where residents can drop-off certain materials for recycling at no charge:
- Find drop-off locations for electronics, tires, lightbulbs and certain household hazardous waste products at: https://rpra.ca/where-to-recycle/
- Find drop-off locations for medication and sharps at: https://healthsteward.ca/find-a-collection-location/
Other ways to reuse and recycle:
- Blue Box materials can be dropped off at the recycling depot on Frobisher St.
- Clothes, household items, furniture, appliances and scrap metal, can be donated to local organizations or businesses that accept these items. Many are charitable organizations that give back to our community.
- Scrap yards may pay for used metal items.
- Items in reusable condition can be given away or sold away through various platforms, garage sales, friends and family, or simply placed in your yard with a “free” sign attached.
- Although not exhaustive, some reuse organization locations can be found on the City’s website: https://www.greatersudbury.ca/live/garbage-and-recycling/how-to-reduce-waste/ .
