City Looking for Feedback on the Final Phase of Sustainable Waste Strategy

May 27, 2024

The City of Greater Sudbury is developing a Sustainable Waste Strategy to guide how the City will manage waste for the next 10 years.

In the fourth and final phase, the City is calling on the community to complete a survey to let us know how you think the strategy can be successfully implemented. As a thank you for completing the survey, residents can enter to win a backyard composter or reusable insulated water bottle. The City is documenting the results and creating the Sustainable Waste Strategy which will include a 10-year implementation plan for 18 recommended actions developed by the community during phases one through three of the project.

The goal of this strategy is to improve waste management programs and services. The recommended actions will reduce and divert waste, optimize and extend landfill space, progress greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and enhance the performance of the City’s current system. The recommended actions in the strategy aim to advance the City’s environmental sustainability performance while providing quality cost-efficient services and working towards the Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP) goal of 90 per cent solid waste diversion by 2050.

In its first two phases, the City engaged residents and local organizations to better understand priorities and perspectives on the waste management system. The feedback has informed the strategy’s vision, guiding principles and evaluation criteria that will help shape the future of waste management in Greater Sudbury. Using the feedback received in Phases 1 and 2, a draft list of options for improvements was developed in Phase 3. The SWS engaged more than 1,500 residents, businesses and other key partners through workshops, community events and a survey to gain insight on the options in fall 2023.
