City seeking feedback regarding Greater Sudbury's urban forest

Jan 10, 2023

The City of Greater Sudbury is seeking community input to help develop an Urban Forest Master Plan.

The urban forest refers to all the trees, tree soils and tree infrastructure within Greater Sudbury’s urban communities. Assessing the extent of the urban forest canopy, or leafy growth viewed from overhead, is often used to determine the percentage of land covered by the urban forest.

The plan will help to identify priority areas where the urban forest canopy should be increased so its many benefits can be enjoyed by residents. It will also consider the diversity of tree species, the health of our tree inventory and how best to maintain existing and future trees.

Building on the success of its past and current regreening efforts, the City is set to focus on the importance of the trees within urban areas where many of us live, work, study and play. Trees store carbon to slow climate change and lessen its impacts and provide key habitat for numerous birds and other animals. Within urban areas especially, trees provide shade, which helps to reduce heat on hot days, clean the air and improve mental health and quality of life.

For these reasons, the City wants to make sure its urban forests continue to thrive for the benefit of all residents.
