Statement from Mayor Bigger on the passing of Charlie Rapsky

Mar 18, 2021

I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Charlie Rapsky, a beacon of Greater Sudbury’s arts community.

Charlie leaves behind a legacy as not only a tremendously gifted artist, but as an adventurer, a storyteller, a mentor, and a true northerner. He spoke often of his love for the rugged beauty of Northern Canada, and his artwork over the decades was inspired by the many people and places he saw, from Sudbury to the Arctic. He inspired us tenfold in return.

Charlie was a much-loved member of our community and will be tremendously missed, but his legacy will live on in the shared memories and beautiful artwork he leaves behind. On behalf of City Council, I offer my heartfelt sympathies to Charlie’s wife, Shirley, his children and grandchildren, and the many other people who knew and loved him.
