Greater Sudbury Solidifies Position as Global Mining Hub at PDAC Virtual Mining Convention

Mar 8, 2021

The City of Greater Sudbury will solidify its stature as a global mining hub during the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) Convention from March 8 to 11, 2021. Due to COVID-19, this year’s convention will feature virtual meetings and networking opportunities with investors from around the world.

“The PDAC Convention is a bit different this year, but what hasn’t changed is the position Greater Sudbury holds as the nickel mining capital of the world,” said Mayor Brian Bigger. “I’m excited to showcase our talent here in a very innovative way. Our local mining industry remains resilient, innovative and growing, despite a very tough economic year brought on by the pandemic. Our message to potential investors remains on track. Expertise, responsiveness and partnerships make our city the best place anywhere to do business.”

PDAC is the largest annual mining industry event in North America. Close to 50 Greater Sudbury based companies will exhibit at the four-day convention.

The City’s convention team, consisting of Mayor Brian Bigger and economic development staff, has scheduled online meetings with current and prospective mining, supply and service companies, trade commissioners and ambassadors.

“A big area of focus this year will be Greater Sudbury’s potential for an electric vehicle battery production facility and as an international supplier of battery grade nickel,” said Brett Williamson, the City’s director of economic development. “The Sudbury Basin contains the world’s second largest nickel deposit and is one of only a few to produce Class 1 nickel for the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries. This advantage, coupled with a skilled workforce and proximity to Ontario’s automotive cluster, place us in an ideal position for this burgeoning market.”

The City will work with MineConnect, Ontario’s Mining Supply and Services Association, to advance business leads and facilitate business contacts for more than 300 local mining supply and service companies. This economic sector employs approximately 14,000 people in the community and has an annual output of $4 billion.
