City of Greater Sudbury to Open Cooling Centre

Jun 28, 2021

A new cooling centre is opening on July 1 for residents looking to escape the heat. With the closing of the YMCA daytime and overnight warming centre, daytime services will now be operated at 199 Larch St. by the Sudbury Action Centre for Youth (SACY).

The space has capacity for 30 people and will provide persons of all ages a place to sit, find nourishment and connect to housing supports. The Centre will operate from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and will remain open until August 31, 2021. City staff continue to work on plans for providing services in the fall.

This latest service complements programs already available, including the Off the Street Emergency Shelter, Sudbury Action Centre for Youth, Cedar Place Women and Families Shelter and the Samaritan Centre. Overnight shelter services see a decrease in clients during the summer, and there is currently adequate available shelter space to accommodate residents who may require these services.
