Take a First Look at New Routes and Schedules for Greater Sudbury Transit

Mar 29, 2019

The transformation of Greater Sudbury Transit into a more efficient and responsive public transit service continues with the fourth in a series of public consultations. The Greater Sudbury Transit Action Plan: Better Routes. Better Schedules. Better Service began in June, 2017 with ideas and feedback gathered through public open houses, workshops and surveys.

Take a First Look encourages residents to review proposed new routes and schedules prior to launch of a new transit network in late August, 2019. Draft schedules and route maps are available online, on paper and at citywide open houses until April 23, 2019.

“Residents have been the driving force behind the improvements the City is eager to implement through the Transit Action Plan,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger. “Public consultations have guided the city’s efforts in developing a plan that will better meet the needs of our community through strategic scheduling, modernized route design, frequency enhancements, and to make better use of technology and infrastructure. This is an important opportunity to again connect with the public to get their feedback ahead of implementation to ensure that we have the best foundation possible in place to support ongoing improvements.”

Greater Sudbury Council approved the Greater Sudbury Transit Action Plan: Better Routes. Better Schedules. Better Service in February, 2019. Residents can participate three ways in finalizing new transit routes and schedules:

  • Online until end of day on Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at overtoyou.greatersudbury.ca
  • On paper at Greater Sudbury Public Libraries/Citizen Service Centres and at the Downtown Transit Centre until April 23, 2019.
  • In person at open houses across the city between April 2 and 18, 2019. See the schedule at overtoyou.greatersudbury.ca, on board Greater Sudbury Transit buses, at Greater Sudbury Public Libraries and at the Downtown Transit Centre.

Improvements to Greater Sudbury Transit services include:

  • Higher frequency and more reliable service on routes serving the highest ridership destinations.
  • Revised schedules so that service can operate on time with connections at mobility hubs throughout the city.
  • Better Sunday service and earlier weekday service.
  • Easier to understand schedules and route information.
  • Options for continuous enhancements and improvements over the next 10 years.

Changes to transit fares will come into effect on July 1, 2019:

  • Transfers will remain in effect for 90 minutes and will be accepted on any route.
  • The cost of monthly passes for adults and students will be reduced.
  • Discounts on monthly passes for seniors will remain.
  • Children under 12 will ride free when accompanied by an adult with a monthly pass.
  • Photo identification will no longer be required when using a monthly pass meaning passes can be shared.
