Residents Invited to Participate in Development Charges Public Meeting

May 1, 2019

Residents are invited to speak at a public meeting on May 7, 2019, at 6 p.m. to give feedback on the proposed Development Charges By-law, which would see new rates implemented beginning July 1, 2019. This public forum takes place during the City Council meeting in the Council Chamber of Tom Davies Square.

Those interested in making a presentation related to the proposed by-law may pre-register by contacting Clerk’s Services at 705-674-4455, extension 4209, or clerks@greatersudbury.ca. Speakers may also register at the public meeting. Presenters will be allocated five minutes each and will be heard in the order they appear on the speakers list. Feedback may also be submitted online at overtoyou.greatersudbury.ca until the approval of a new by-law, which is anticipated during the City Council meeting of May 28, 2019.

Written comments will also be accepted and can be sent to the City Clerk, City of Greater Sudbury, P.O. Box 5000, Station A, Ontario, P3A 5P3 or to clerks@greatersudbury.ca.

All written submissions and those expressed at the public meeting will be considered prior to the approval of the new Development Charges By-law, which is anticipated during the City Council meeting of May 28, 2019.

The proposed by-law and the background study are available via the City’s website at www.greatersudbury.ca/devcharges

Development Charges are collected from the developer or landowner at the building permit stage and are used to fund infrastructure projects needed to support new development, including water, wastewater, roads, police and public safety, libraries, fire services, recreation, paramedic services and transit. If funding is not recovered through development charges, growth-related projects could be deferred until funding can be obtained externally, or through property taxes and water and wastewater user fees.
