Reminder: Garbage Bag Limit Changes from Two to One on October 1, 2019

Sep 26, 2019

On October 1, 2019, the residential garbage bag limit will change from two bags to one.

This change is part of City Council’s commitment to an environmentally sustainable community, and the continued improvement to quality of life and place in Greater Sudbury. The diversion of waste from our landfill sites ensures a longer lifespan for our facilities.

The City will continue to provide unlimited Blue Box recycling, Green Cart organics, leaf and yard trimmings collection, and pick up of large furniture, appliances and electronics on a weekly basis.

New programs to help residents who may have difficulties reducing their garbage to one bag have been implemented. In addition to the diaper and medical waste support programs, the City has introduced a new program for residents with registered dogs or cats.

These support programs are meant to help households meet the new bag limit. More information about these programs can be found on our website at www.greatersudbury.ca/specialprograms.

Additional Blue Boxes and Green Carts may be requested by calling 311 or by ordering online at www.greatersudbury.ca/blueboxrequest and www.greatersudbury.ca/greencartrequest .

To purchase a Big Blue large capacity recycling container with lid for $10, visit the Recycling Center on Frobisher Street or your nearest Customer Service Centre. It is recommended to call Citizen Service Centres in advance to ensure availability.

If you’re unsure what goes in which container, download the Waste Wise Greater Sudbury app or visit the Waste Wizard on the City website to help you sort it all out.

For residents who may occasionally have more than one bag of waste, bag tags can be purchased online, at Citizen Service Centre and Library locations, and at some participating retailers.

Visit www.greatersudbury.ca/bagtags for more information or to purchase tags.
