GSDC Welcomes New and Returning Board Members and Releases 2018 Annual Report

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) welcomed new and returning members to its board and made new appointments to its executive committee during its Annual General Meeting in late June.

Andrée Lacroix, of Lacroix Lawyers/Advocats, has been appointed chair of the board, while Peter Nykilchuk, of Hampton Inn by Hilton and Homewood Suites by Hilton, has been appointed first vice-chair. Yonaniko (Iyo) Grenon, Glencore Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, has been appointed second vice-chair.

“On behalf of the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation, I would like to welcome the new members to the board, and I am very pleased to take on the role of Chair,” said Andrée Lacroix, newly elected GSDC Board Chair. “Our board of directors represents a variety of sectors, both public and private, but we all serve a common goal to support economic growth in our community.”

The GSDC is also proud to welcome new board members Jeff Portelance, of Marcotte Mining Machinery Services, and Lisa Demmer of Rock-Tech.

Members with terms that have ended include Karen Hourtovenko, Lifezone and Wendy Watson, Greater Sudbury Utilities, who served as GSDC Board Chair for two terms. Dr. Pierre Zundel has resigned from the GSDC as he takes on a new role as President and CEO of Collège communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick in New Brunswick.

“I would like to thank Dr. Pierre Zundel, Wendy Watson and Karen Hourtevenko for their dedication, support and the invaluable service they have provided to the Board and to our community during their terms,” added Lacroix.

Andrée Lacroix is a partner at Lacroix Lawyers/Avocats. After graduating from Laurentian University, she moved to New Brunswick where she studied law at l’Université de Moncton.  Upon completion of her French law degree, Andrée returned home to northern Ontario to practise law and raise her family.

Jeff Portelance is the Capital Sales Manager for Marcotte Mining Machinery Services Inc. and has extensive experience in both the professional and volunteer sectors. As part of the GSDC, Jeff is looking forward to fostering cooperative work strategies to increase growth, innovation and diversity in Greater Sudbury.

Lisa Demmer is actively involved in several local groups and is currently the Marketing and Relationships Manager with Rock-Tech. Lisa is passionate about her community and brings a diverse perspective from public, non-profit and private sectors and is seeking to contribute to building a community that brings health, happiness and prosperity to future generations.

GSDC Annual Report Now Available

The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) has released its 2018 Annual Report, highlighting economic growth and prosperity in our community during the last year. 

The 2018 Annual Report celebrates the successes of local entrepreneurs, highlights the investments in our community by the City and Council through the GSDC, showcases our talented and growing workforce, and demonstrates our city’s vibrant culture. 

The annual report provides an overview of the activities and investments of City Council, the GSDC and the City’s Economic Development Division in 2018. Using the goals set out in the economic development strategic plan, From the Ground Up: A Community Economic Development Plan 2015-2025, the report provides an update to the community on goals achieved over the last year, and identifies areas of improvement and priorities for the future.

About the GSDC

The GSDC is the economic development arm of the City of Greater Sudbury, consisting of a 17-member volunteer board of directors, including City Councillors and the Mayor, and supported by City staff. 

The GSDC acts as a catalyst for economic development initiatives and supports the attraction, development and retention of business in the community. Board members represent various private and public sectors including mining supply and services, small and medium-sized enterprises, hospitality and tourism, finance and insurance, professional services, retail trade, and public administration.
