Crews Remain in Full Call Out to Address Effects of Winter Storms

The City’s winter control crews remain in a full call out to address the winter storms experienced throughout the community this week. The focus remains on plowing main roads, and crews will then move to clearing residential roads and subdivisions.

Environment Canada records show that more than 35 cm of snow has blanketed Greater Sudbury over the last week, and 66 cm has fallen so far in February. This winter, we have received 3 metres of snow to date.

Snow plowing and winter control activities will continue throughout the weekend, as vehicles driving on packed snow conditions will create loose snow on roadways. Crews will also begin clearing sidewalks, bus stops and fire hydrants over the weekend. Due to significant accumulations of snow, plowing operations on main roads, and sidewalk, bus stop and fire hydrant clearing will continue into Monday.

After completing snow plowing operations, focus will return to widening streets. If necessary, snow at intersections will be removed to improve site lines, and to widen extremely narrow roadways.

Residents should not park their vehicles on roads whenever possible to allow crews to complete their work.

Thank you to residents for their patience and consideration as crews work around the clock to address the effects of these significant winter events.

Did you know?

  • If you stretched out the city’s roads, it equals 3,600 kilometres of roadway, the equivalent of a single-lane highway connecting Greater Sudbury to the US-Mexican border at El Paso Texas.
  • The city maintains about 351 kilometres of sidewalk during the winter.
  • When total snow accumulation reaches 8 centimetres, a full deployment of all the City’s 80 pieces of equipment, including 22 sidewalk plows and 10 4 x 4 loaders is deployed.
