Aug 2, 2019

Phase two of the construction of Place des Arts will begin on Tuesday, August 6 at the corner of Elgin and Larch Streets, and Medina Lane in downtown Greater Sudbury.

As a result of the construction, the sidewalk and metered parking on Larch Street adjacent to the Place des Arts site will be closed. Thirty parking spaces in the Energy Court municipal parking lot will be used to accommodate contractors and equipment. Residents will be advised of any future traffic and parking disruptions as construction continues.

About Place des Arts:

Place des Arts is one of the four Large Projects endorsed by City Council in 2016 and will be the first multidisciplinary arts centre in Northeastern Ontario. This multipurpose cultural centre will feature a fixed-seating theatre, a black-box style multifunction studio, a contemporary art gallery, spaces for youth programming, a bistro and retail facilities. In addition to office spaces, meeting rooms will also be accessible. Place des Arts is expected to open in 2020, offer 850 annual cultural activities and is likely to attract 50,000 visitors to the downtown core each year. Services will be provided in French and English.

The Place des Arts project is led by seven local Francophone arts organizations: Carrefour francophone de Sudbury, Centre franco-ontarien de folklore, Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario, Concerts La Nuit sur l’étang, Éditions Prise de parole, Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario, and Salon du livre du Grand Sudbury.
