City of Greater Sudbury Makes Investments in a Cultural Community

Dec 6, 2019

As part of the 2019 Arts and Culture Grant Program, $584,357 is being invested in local arts and cultural organizations. Strengthening the framework of programs that support the artistic, cultural and creative expression of local citizens and groups is a strategic priority of Council.

A total of 34 successful applicants were selected by a jury of volunteers based on artistic/cultural merit, organizational/financial health and community benefit. The funding is administered by the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) to provide arts and cultural organizations the ability to generate employment and support dozens of festivals for an estimated overall return of $7.85 for each dollar invested.

“On behalf of City Council, I want to congratulate the recipients of the 2019 Arts and Culture Grant Program,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger.  “Greater Sudbury is a vibrant, artistic and cultural destination thanks to the many creative individuals and tireless volunteers whose organizations provide festivals, learning activities, workshops, performances and exhibitions.”

Applications for the 2020 Arts and Culture Grant Program are now open. Past applicants should note that program guidelines and the application process have been updated for 2020. Guidelines and application forms are available at www.investsudbury.ca/arts-and-culture. Deadline for submission is February 6, 2020.

“Investments in arts and culture have a proven return on investment,” said GSDC Board Chair Andrée Lacroix.  “Nearly 358,000 people attended the 1,108 public activities hosted by recipients of the 2019 Arts and Culture Grant Program. I wish to express gratitude on behalf of the GSDC to the volunteer jury members who put in many hours reviewing and discussing grant applications.”

Volunteers are invited to apply to serve on the operating and project grant juries for the 2020 Arts and Culture Grant Program. Letters and résumés will be accepted until January 23, 2020, by email at culture@greatersudbury.ca.
