City Achieves National Recognition for Marketing Local Mining Supply and Services

The City of Greater Sudbury has achieved national recognition for its efforts in marketing the local mining supply and services cluster, a centre of international excellence consisting of the largest integrated mining complex in the world and more than 300 mining supply firms.

The Economic Developers Association of Canada (EDAC) presented the City of Greater Sudbury’s Economic Development team with a Marketing Canada Award on September 22 in recognition of the exceptional quality and success of its Mining Cluster Reception. The networking event showcased local mining service companies and global mining leaders to an international audience attending the 2019 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference in Toronto.

"I want to congratulate the City’s Economic Development team and community partners for all of their hard work towards organizing and hosting this award-winning networking event at PDAC,” said Mayor Brian Bigger. “It’s a fantastic gathering that highlights Greater Sudbury’s status as a leader in the Canadian and global mining industry and I am glad to see EDAC recognize its impact.”

The Sudbury Mining Cluster Reception took place on March 5, 2019 at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto. A partnership of 22 local mining and services companies and organizations joined the City of Greater Sudbury to host the event. Approximately 90 local mining supply and service companies participated as exhibitors to a capacity guest list of 400 delegates, including MPs, MPPs, Cabinet ministers, ambassadors, First Nations Chiefs and mining executives from around the world.

"The Sudbury Mining Cluster Reception at PDAC is our opportunity to showcase Greater Sudbury and all it has to offer to global mining influencers, and we are so proud it's grown into one of the can't-miss events of the PDAC conference,” said Meredith Armstrong, Acting Director of Economic Development for the City of Greater Sudbury. “Sincere thanks to the Economic Development team for their efforts, and to our sponsors who helped make this event possible."

Following the PDAC conference, delegations from Greenland, Denmark, Finland and Australia travelled to the City of Greater Sudbury to visit local mining supply and service companies and post-secondary institutions, learning about local expertise in mining, remediation and regreening.  A total of 10 delegations from around the world will have visited Greater Sudbury this year, including a delegation from Colombia arriving this October.
