Greater Sudbury Public Library Begins Search for Next Poet Laureate

Oct 11, 2017

Local poets with a passion for advocacy of literacy and local heritage are invited to consider the role of Greater Sudbury’s fifth Poet Laureate. A complete description of the position and details for application are available online at www.sudburylibraries.ca or at any branch of the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

“The Greater Sudbury Poet Laureate is an extension of a cultural community that embraces arts, celebrates literacy and treasures heritage,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger. “We are truly blessed in Greater Sudbury to have a vast pool from which to draw those who will chronicle our history. On behalf of residents, I extend sincere gratitude to outgoing Poet Laureate Kim Fahner for her creative spirit and lasting vision.”

Greater Sudbury’s Poet Laureate will serve as an active advocate for poetry, literacy and literature by initiating and participating in readings and other events throughout the community for a two-year term, commencing January 2018. The Poet Laureate’s mandate also includes the creation of a legacy project that will be unique to the individual.

“I’ve been honoured to have been appointed as the first woman in the role, and I’ve been focused on raising awareness about poetry in our community,” said Poet Laureate Kim Fahner. “The next person in the role will have, I’m sure, as much joy in creating their own vision of the role as I have, and I very much look forward to seeing that creativity continue to flourish in our city.”

Applicants for the position of Poet Laureate must be a published poet, recognized for their achievements, and active in the cultural and literary community. Additional requirements include demonstrated leadership skills, public speaking ability and flexibility to carry out all duties required of the position in a manner that reflects English, French or Indigenous heritage.

Closing date for applications for the term 2018-2020 is 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017. The Greater Sudbury Poet Laureate receives an honorarium of $1,000 per term.
