Greater Sudbury Advanced Care Paramedic Lorraine Belanger has been awarded the Governor General’s Exemplary Service Medal for 20 years of outstanding service to the pre-hospital emergency medical services community. She received the award at a ceremony hosted by the Ontario Association of Paramedic Chiefs on September 29.

Greater Sudbury Assistant Deputy Chief of Paramedic Operations Paul Kadwell and Platoon Superintendent Darren Grace, who received their 30-year bars for decades of meritorious service, joined Belanger at the ceremony.

"We take great pride in the commitment and expertise of our paramedic team,” said Trevor Bain, Greater Sudbury Chief of Fire and Paramedic Services. “These national awards symbolize our country’s gratitude for highly dedicated professionals who demonstrate good conduct, industry and efficiency, with an awareness of the potential personal risks inherent in the performance of their duties.”

Lorraine Belanger began her career as a Paramedic in December of 1995. She is a member of the newly developed peer support network for local paramedics, in addition to instructing and mentoring future paramedics attending Collège Boréal. The award of the Exemplary Service Medal cited her professional commitment, her positive attitude and work ethic, and the respect of her peers.

Darren Grace began his career as a local Primary Care Paramedic in 1985 and was promoted to Platoon Superintendent in 2005. Grace is recognized by his peers as a highly effective and respected leader.
