Residents and media are invited to the grand reopening of the Chelmsford Community Centre/Arena on Saturday, September 12, 2015. The arena is reopening after having been closed for rehabilitation over the 2014-2015 season.

The start of the new skating season will be celebrated with an opening ceremony at 11 a.m. and a free public skate from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

“On behalf of myself and Council, I’d like to welcome back the community to the Chelmsford Arena,” Mayor Brian Bigger said. “The City of Greater Sudbury is dedicated to providing safe, active environments for all our citizens who enjoy a healthy, happy lifestyle.”

The Chelmsford Arena was closed for safety concerns due to the failure of the concrete ice slab and header trench walls caused by frost heave.

The $2.6 million rehabilitation of the arena features a new ice pad with sub-surface heating system to prevent future frost heave, new rink boards and safety glass, new bleacher seating, new LED lighting, protective netting, additional dressing and tournament rooms, renovations to the lobby and main washrooms, fresh paint, and health and safety upgrades including accessibility upgrades.

“I’m very happy that the Chelmsford Arena is back in operation and better than ever,” Ward 3 Councillor Gerry Montpellier said. “Arena activities are a staple for winter fun in the community and we are pleased to welcome everyone back for another exciting skating season.”
