Greater Sudbury Development Corporation Approves Arts and Culture Operating Grants
Jul 15, 2014
The Greater Sudbury Development Corporation (GSDC) Board of Directors has confirmed support for local arts and culture with the approval of grant disbursements totaling $536,886 to offset the operating expenses of 17 not-for-profit organizations in 2014, an increase of $40,866 over the previous year. Operating grants are awarded to organizations with an ongoing presence in the city and an established track record of success.
“We value the economic potential and contributions of our arts and cultural community,” said GSDC Board Chair Dr. Darren Stinson. “An investment in arts and culture provides a significant return to the entire community in terms of benefits in education, entertainment, aesthetics, employment and volunteer opportunities. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to express gratitude to our grant subcommittee volunteers for their diligence and dedication to an important part of our community.”
To ensure a sound investment, a Major Arts and Culture Grant Subcommittee of the GSDC evaluates applications for funding based on three criteria: artistic/cultural merit (45 %), community impact/benefits (25 %) and organizational/financial health (30 %). Their recommendations for grants are then approved by the GSDC Board of Directors.
An additional $57,819 of City funding has been awarded to 23 not-for-profit arts and cultural institutions through a separate Community Arts and Culture Grant Panel for special or one-time activities or exhibits, skills development or acquisition of new equipment.
