FAQs for voting online
What if my name is not on the voters' list when I go to vote on Election Day?
Not on the list? No problem.
If you are not on the voters' list come Election Day, visit any of the 27 voting locations to be added by providing the required proof of identity and a qualifying address. Please visit www.greatersudbury.ca/votinglocations to find the voting location nearest to you.
We encourage all voters to check if they are on the voters’ list and make any updates to their information prior to the advance vote period.
Who can I call if I am having trouble voting online?
For assistance with online voting, please call 3-1-1 Mondays to Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Can I vote for only one race?
Yes but the system will alert you if you have not voted in all of the races. If that is your intent, you may cast your ballot accordingly.
How is it ensured that voters don't vote more than once?
When a voter casts a ballot either online or in person, their name will be automatically struck off the voters’ list as having cast their ballot. The date, time and location at which the voter received their ballot will be recorded.
Can anyone tell how I voted if they know my Personal Identification Number (PIN) and password?
No. The system does not track how a particular PIN and password combination has been voted, only that it has been used to cast a vote. The electronic voting system is designed to keep the voter's identity and ballot separate.
Can the voters verify that their online votes have been included in the final tally?
In order to vote online, a voter must enter their Login and Personal Identification Number (PIN) that was provided to them in their Voter Information Letter and confirm their identity by providing their date of birth. Once the voter’s ballot has been cast and stored in the secure virtual ballot box, the voter will receive a voting receipt and a unique number. The system will not track voters' computers or link a voter to their private voting choices.
Once a vote has been cast, can it be changed
No. Once a vote has been cast (i.e. you confirm your vote), it cannot be changed. This process is the same as dropping the ballot into the ballot box in a traditional paper-based election, ensuring complete voter anonymity and ballot secrecy.
How does the voting system ensure the privacy of the voters?
The company selected to provide the Online Voting system has more than a decade of experience successfully delivering elections across the globe and uses highly secure technology to separate the vote from the identity of the voter.
Can I vote with a smartphone or tablet?
You may vote using smartphones and tablets with Android and iOS (iPhone) operating systems. Blackberry and Unix devices are no supported.
Once I enter my PIN and start my voting process, do I have to vote for all the races on the ballot in one session?
Yes. You must complete the entire voting process in one session. When a voter is timed out by default, or when the session is interrupted or terminated (intentionally or not) before the final ballot is cast, no information is stored, and no votes are counted. This practice always guarantees the voter’s privacy. If your session is interrupted, you will have to start the voting process from the beginning.
What do I do if I am not sure if I have already voted?
If you have already voted, you will be advised of that when you try to log on and vote again.
Once a vote has been confirmed, can it be changed?
No. Once a vote has been confirmed, it cannot be changed. This process is the same as dropping the ballot into the ballot box.
