How to Become a Member of the Canadian Ski Patrol

Becoming a member of the ski patrol is an exciting way to develop valuable skills, serve your community and spend your winter doing something you love.
The Canadian Ski Patrol (CSP) is a vibrant and welcoming organization. Members have a shared passion for skiing or snowboarding and a desire to make a meaningful difference in their community.

Training

From the moment you join, you’ll be learning, volunteering and working as part of a team. CSP certified training includes:

  • Advanced First Aid
  • Emergency care and patient assessment
  • Toboggan handling
  • Skiing and snowboarding skill development

Training begins in early September, with on snow evaluations in December and January.

Who Can Apply?

You are eligible to join if you:

  • Are 18 years of age or older

  • Are a strong intermediate or better skier or snowboarder
  • Can safely handle the terrain and conditions at your local ski area
  • Are available for training and regular patrol shifts
  • Have a genuine desire to help others and contribute to a team environment

After completing your Advanced First Aid certification in the fall, you’ll be ready to complete your on-snow training and become a fully certified patroller.

Become an On Snow First (OSF) Patroller

The On Snow First (OSF) program allows you to begin patrolling even if you are unable to attend the pre-season training in the fall. OSF candidates participate in on snow training beginning in January, gaining practical experience and developing key skills while preparing for full certification in the following season.
This program is ideal for individuals who want to get involved right away, contribute on the hill and build a strong foundation before completing their Advanced First Aid training.

As an On Snow First patroller, you will not provide first aid yet, but will gain valuable, hands-on experience in the core areas of ski patrol operations, including:

  • Accident Scene Management

Learn how to organize and support emergency situations safely and effectively.

  • Toboggan Handling and Transportation Techniques

Develop the skills to assist with patient transport under the guidance of certified patrollers.

  • Radio Communication and Protocols

Gain confidence using patrol radios and responding to calls on the hill.

  • Supporting Accident Scenes and Patrol Room Operations

Assist with incident response, equipment setup and the day-to-day tasks that keep the hill running smoothly.

Throughout the season, you'll work side by side with experienced patrollers who will mentor you and prepare you for the next stage of training. You’ll be learning many of the skills typically taught after completing Advanced First Aid, giving you a significant head start for the following season.

The French interface of our new registration system is still under development, however it is important that the City goes live with the new system as the existing registration and facility booking system is no longer supported by the vendor. Residents can still receive this service in French by calling 311 to have a French-speaking operator process bookings or registrations. The French interface will be launched in time for the fall/winter registration period.
