Swim only in Designated Areas
- Always swim in areas supervised by lifeguards. They are trained to handle emergencies and can keep an eye out for dangers. Designated swimming areas should me clearly marked with orange buoys.
Stay Aware of Weather and Water Conditions
- Check the weather forecast before heading to the beach.
- Avoid swimming in rough water or during a storm.
Know the Warning Flags
- Red: High hazard (dangerous conditions).
- Yellow: Medium hazard (moderate conditions).
- Green: Low hazard (calm conditions, exercise caution).
Avoid Alcohol
- Alcohol impairs judgment, coordination, and reaction times, which can be especially dangerous when swimming.
Use Sun Protection
- Apply waterproof sunscreen with an SPF and reapply every two hours.
- Wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and UV-protective clothing.
