AMI Water Meters

Greater Sudbury has upgraded the way we track water usage with the installation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) water meters. These new smart meters provide accurate, efficient, and timely water usage data—bringing modern technology right to your tap.

What is an AMI Water Meter?

An AMI water meter measures how much water enters your property, just like traditional meters. But unlike older models that required manual readings, AMI meters automatically transmit usage data wirelessly through an outdoor transmitter. This data goes directly to Greater Sudbury Utilities.

Benefits to Residents

With AMI meters, residents gain access to real-time tools and insights through the online customer portal. These new features make it easier than ever to monitor and manage your household water use:

Track Your Usage in Real Time

Log into your water account at myaccount.gsuinc.ca to view hourly water consumption. Depending on how your meter is set, you can monitor your water use in near real time and identify when you're using the most water.

Detect Leaks Early

Set a “continuous consumption” alarm to get notified if water is running non-stop outside your normal parameters. You decide how long water must run before an alert is triggered and how you want to be notified. If uninterrupted water use exceeds your selected threshold, you will receive a notification. This can help you catch potential leaks before they lead to high water bills or property damage.

Note: An alert does not automatically mean there is a leak, but it is a strong indicator that water may be running when it should not be. Alerts serves as an early warning tool. You remain responsible for follow-up and repairs.

Avoid Surprise Costs

By detecting leaks and monitoring your water use, you can prevent unexpected charges on your bill and use water more efficiently.

Plan Ahead with Better Data

Access more accurate and timely readings to help track long-term usage and make smarter choices about your water habits.

Conserve Water and Save Money

Understanding how and when you use water makes it easier to cut back on unnecessary consumption and lower your utility costs.

How to Care for Your Water Meter

While AMI meters offer many benefits, property owners are responsible for the care and maintenance of both their indoor water meter and outdoor remote transmitter. Here are some tips to keep your meter in good shape:

  • Prevent Freezing:
Protect your water meter and pipes from freezing during cold weather to avoid damage.
  • Ensure Accessibility:
Keep the outdoor transmitter clear of snow, debris, or other obstructions to allow city crews easy access for readings.
  • Inspect Regularly:
Check your indoor water meter once a month for cracks or damage. Regularly operate the two isolation valves on either side of the meter to prevent them from seizing.
  • Planning Renovations or Construction?
Contact the City at 311 before starting any projects near your meter or transmitter to determine if they need to be moved.
  • Authorized Work Only:
Water meters are owned by the City of Greater Sudbury. Only authorized Water/Wastewater Services staff can install, adjust, or service meters. If your meter requires inspection due to unusual consumption patterns, city staff will contact you directly.

Take control of your water use with AMI water meters—helping you conserve water, prevent costly leaks, and make smarter, informed choices about your consumption.
