2. Disposal of Waste Down Household Drains

Household plumbing and the sanitary sewer system are not designed to manage the disposal of garbage. The improper disposal of items has the potential to damage the system and contribute to sewer blockages.

Residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial customers should always avoid the discharges of products down drains. This includes:

  • acute hazardous waste chemicals
  • pesticides
  • biomedical waste
  • household objects
  • toiletries
  • clay
  • food waste
  • Fats, Oil, or Grease (F.O.G)
  • Sanitary wipes

Even wipes labelled "flushable" do not break down in the sanitary system and can create damaging sewer clogs. Sewer clogs are another leading cause of sewer backups in basements.
