Wastewater Bypass and Overflow Map and Reports
Understanding Wastewater Bypasses and Overflows
The City of Greater Sudbury may occasionally release wastewater to prevent flooding in homes, streets, and wastewater treatment plants. This is a necessary measure to protect public and environmental health.
Excessive stormwater entering the system can overwhelm treatment plants, potentially damaging mechanical and electrical equipment. It can also wash away the microscopic organisms essential for wastewater treatment, disrupting plant operations for days or even weeks. To manage these risks, wastewater treatment plant Operations staff continuously monitor system levels, incoming flows, and plant conditions, making real-time adjustments as needed.
Current or Active Bypass/Overflows
Residents can stay informed by using the Wastewater Release Status Map above which provides near real-time updates on active and completed wastewater release events. This interactive tool helps the public understand when partially treated wastewater s flowing into local waterways.
