Downspouts and Sump Pit Drainage Systems

You are not allowed to connect downspouts and sump pumps to the sewer system. During a heavy rainfall, these connections increase the risk of flooded basements and overflow of untreated wastewater into waterways.

Make sure that water from sump pumps and eaves troughs does not flow onto neighbouring properties and is not emptying into the sewer system.

Downspout Tips

  • Use a downspout extension to position rain gutters away from foundation walls
  •  Put a rain barrel under your downspout for a free source of water for outdoor use.

Exemptions

  • Residential properties constructed before January 1, 1973 with a connection to the sewer system approved at time of construction
  • Any other circumstances must approved by the City’s General Manager of Infrastructure.

If you do not comply with the by-law , you can be fined between $5,000 and $10,000 per day for a first offence. Corporations can be fined up to $50,000 per day for a first offence.
