Common Questions about Ontario Works Assistance

Ontario Works Assistance and Child Support

  • Child support income is not deducted off of your Ontario Works assistance.
  • Spousal support income is taken off dollar for dollar.
  • If you qualify for assistance, your caseworker may complete a referral for you to get assistance with spousal support.

Ontario Works Assistance and OSAP

If you are a single person who is a full time student at a certified post secondary education institution and receiving OSAP, you will not be eligible for Ontario Works assistance.  It does not matter if you qualify or don’t qualify for a student loan.

If you are a sole support parent or a dependant adult who is in an OSAP funded program and on assistance it may be possible to still qualify for assistance and a student loan at the same time.

When you apply for assistance your caseworker will get all the necessary information from you to determine your eligibility.

Ontario Works Assistance and Owning a Vehicle

You are allowed to have a vehicle while receiving Ontario Works assistance and don’t have to sell it.  If there are two vehicles in your household, you may be allowed to keep the second vehicle if there is a family member in your household who requires it to participate in employment assistance activities or to keep their job.
