Physical Fitness Test

Physical Testing Process and Requirements

Pre-Testing Health Assessment
All candidates must undergo blood pressure and pulse checks before and after the physical testing. To proceed:

  • Blood pressure must be below 160/100.
  • Pulse must be below 110 bpm.

Testing Environment
The physical testing will occur in a circuit-style format within the fire training grounds at the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre. Candidates must maintain continuous forward motion throughout each circuit stage until the task is completed.

Testing Consistency
The following sequence ensures uniformity in testing for all candidates:

Physical Testing Circuit

  1. Tower Climb and Descent:
    • Climb a fixed ladder on the tower's east side to the 4th floor.
    • Transition inside the tower to climb to the 5th floor, then descend to the 4th floor.
  2. Hose Hoist and Descent:
    • Use a rope to raise a folded hose from the ground to the 4th floor.
    • Pull the hose over the railing and descend using the outside staircase.
  3. Hose Shoulder Carry:
    • Shoulder a folded hose at the base of the staircase.
    • Climb four flights of stairs to touch door #4, descend, and return the hose to the ground.
  4. Weighted Pail Carry:
    • Carry 50 lb. pail 50 feet with one hand, switch hands, and carry it back 50 feet.
  5. Extension Ladder Climb:
    • Climb the extension ladder on the tower's west side until it reaches the platform, touches it, and descends.
  6. Manikin Drag:
    • Drag an 85 kg (185 lb.) manikin 20 meters.
  7. Hose Drag:
    • Shoulder a 65 mm hose connected to a 100 mm hose and drag it 50 meters.

Strength Test

  • Lift an auto-extrication tool to chest height and lower it to the ground, repeating 10 times.
  • Following the 10th repetition, hold the tool at chest height for as long as possible.
  • Timing starts at the first lift and ends when the tool drops below chest height.

Claustrophobia Test

  • Enter a “blackout” culvert while wearing an SCBA mask covered with tape for three minutes.
  • Candidates will be provided with four words before entering the culvert and will be required to accurately relay them upon exiting.

This structured process ensures fair evaluation while testing candidates' physical, mental, and situational readiness.
