Restricted Dog Breeds
The provincial Dog Owner’s Liability Act (R.S.O. 1990 c. D. 16) places restrictions on ownership of the following breeds:
- A pit bull terrier
- A Staffordshire bull terrier
- An American Staffordshire terrier
- An American pit bull terrier
- A dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics substantially similar to any of those dogs.
The legislation allows individuals to keep these restricted breeds under the following circumstances:
- The restricted breed was in the possession of the pet owner before August 29, 2005
- The restricted breed is spayed or neutered
- The restricted breed is on leash and muzzled in public places
