Restricted Dog Breeds

The provincial Dog Owner’s Liability Act (R.S.O. 1990 c. D. 16) places restrictions on ownership of the following breeds:

  • A pit bull terrier
  • A Staffordshire bull terrier
  • An American Staffordshire terrier
  • An American pit bull terrier
  • A dog that has an appearance and physical characteristics substantially similar to any of those dogs.

The legislation allows individuals to keep these restricted breeds under the following circumstances:

  • The restricted breed was in the possession of the pet owner before August 29, 2005
  • The restricted breed is spayed or neutered
  • The restricted breed is on leash and muzzled in public places
