Requirements in Downtown Sudbury

  • Outdoor patios are only permitted between the Summer Months between May 15th to October 15th. These times may very depending on when the winter sand street sweeping program downtown is finished and when the first snow fall begins.
  • Outdoor patios, sidewalk retail and cafés that occupy the sidewalk must provide for a 1.8m clear path along the Municipal sidewalk, and must meet the Ontario Traffic Council Restaurant Patio Guidelines https://otc.org/research-and-resources/restaurant-patio-guidelines/
  • Outdoor patios, sidewalk retail and cafés are permitted directly in front and/or along the side (in the case of a corner lot) of the business location.
  • Outdoor patios, sidewalk retail and cafés may extend beyond the business location to an adjacent business with the written permission of the adjacent property owner.
  • On-street parking may be used for outdoor patios, sidewalk retail and cafés with the approval of the City of Greater Sudbury.
  • • A portable fence at least one metre high must clearly delineate the area on the sidewalk being used. The fence must be affixed to the ground without damage to public property or underground utilities.
  • Access to Parking Pay Stations, hydrants and maintenance holes must remain available.
  • Outdoor patios, sidewalk retail and cafés are not permitted within 6 metres of a traffic intersection or public laneway without written permission of the City of Greater Sudbury.
  • Fixtures cannot be permanent and must be removed at the end of the season.
  • The minimum clearance of a canopy overhang must be 2.45 metres. Only canopies that can be removed daily or rolled back to the building are permitted.
  • At the end of each business day, the business is required to clean (sweep & wash) the entire sidewalk in and around the outdoor area and remove debris to a covered refuse receptacle.
