Who’s Inside: Greater Sudbury Transit and Fleet Centre

Sep 5, 2014

The Greater Sudbury Transit and Fleet Centre is a new workplace for 204 employees, including licensed mechanics and welders, auto body repairers, technicians, service staff, bus operators, driver certification trainers and administrative staff.

The Greater Sudbury Transit and Fleet Centre will operate seven days a week on a rotational shift schedule, meaning not all employees will report to their workplace at the same time.

Greater Sudbury Transit operates a fleet of 60 buses providing transportation to approximately five million passengers each year in almost every corner of the community. Greater Sudbury Transit also manages Handi-Transit Service for persons who cannot access the conventional transit system due to a physical disability.

  • Transit mechanics and administrative staff will move from the Greater Sudbury Transit garage and offices on Frobisher Street. The future of this structure will be determined as part of a municipal facility and asset management study.

Greater Sudbury Fleet Services is responsible for approximately 900 vehicles and equipment with an estimated value of $90 million. Services include procurement, setup and disposal of vehicles and equipment, preventative maintenance, repairs both in the field and at the shop, small tools repairs, welding and fabrication, parts and fuel management.

  • Fleet mechanics and maintenance staff will move from five depots located on Frobisher Street and St. Clair Street in Sudbury, Suez Drive in Capreol, Radisson Avenue in Chelmsford and Black Lake Road in Lively.
  • Greater Sudbury Roads Operations will continue use of the five depots for equipment and vehicle storage, salt and sand storage and loading, pending the completion of a municipal facility and asset management study.

Greater Sudbury Transit buses will park inside the new Transit and Fleet Centre. Buses and Fleet vehicles will follow three traffic patterns:

  • A new exit onto Lorne Street has been constructed for right-turning vehicles only, prior to the western entrance of Webbwood Drive.
  • Right turns off Lorne Street will use the western entrance to Webbwood Drive.
  • Left turns on and off Lorne Street will use the traffic lights at the eastern entrance to Webbwood Drive.
