Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter Temporarily Relocating

Effective July 31, 2026, the Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter will temporarily relocate to the former Copper Cliff fire hall at 35 Godfrey Dr. while work continues on a new permanent facility. 

The temporary location will allow animal shelter services to continue without interruption while making use of an existing City-owned building. All regular shelter services will remain available during the relocation. 

The temporary facility has been prepared to support animal care and minimize noise and disruption for nearby residents. Animals will be housed indoors, and outdoor activities will be far from property lines and supervised by staff. Kennels are also designed to help reduce noise.

In May 2026, the City’s Finance and Administration Committee approved construction of a new municipal animal shelter at 2500 Dube Rd. in the Minnow Lake area. The City has operated its animal shelter from leased space in Wahnapitae since 2016. The new permanent shelter, which will be bigger and closer to the city core, is expected to be completed in late 2027.
