City improving customer experience at Walden Transfer Station

The City of Greater Sudbury is making improvements at the Walden Transfer Station to provide a more convenient experience for residents. Work will begin Tuesday, May 19, 2026, and will continue for approximately six weeks.

Once complete, the upgraded site will include a new ramp and roll-off bin system that will make it easier for customers to unload waste down into bins, similar to the system at the Sudbury Landfill site. This long-term improvement is designed to enhance  access, convenience and overall customer service at the site.

During the construction period, some services will be moved to a smaller, temporary location within the Walden Transfer Station site while others will be temporarily located to other landfill and waste diversion sites. Service for the primary waste types will continue during construction, but in a temporary location to help protect customer safety while work is underway. Signs will be in place to direct traffic.

While construction is underway, materials that will not be accepted at the Walden Transfer Station include:

  • Waste from the Flood Waste Relief Program
  • Furniture, appliances, and electronics, including mattresses and boxsprings
  • Tires
  • Scrap metal
  • Concrete and brick
  • Clothing and other textiles

Residents may instead use the Sudbury or Azilda landfill sites or choose other convenient collection programs and diversion options already available in Greater Sudbury.

  • Large furniture, appliances, electronics, mattresses and boxsprings can be set out through the City’s unlimited roadside collection program. To have your items collected, place a request on Waste Wise.
  • Appliances are often accepted at local scrap metal yards.
  • Usable furniture and clothing can be sold, given away or donated.
  • Electronics and tires can be dropped off through producer responsibility recycling programs.
