City Announces Retirement of Chief Building Official and Appointment of Successor
Oct 15, 2026
The City of Greater Sudbury is celebrating the career and upcoming retirement of Guido Mazza, Director of Building Services and Chief Building Official, who will conclude 33 years of service with the municipality on December 18, 2026.
Throughout his more than three decades of service, Mr. Mazza played a key role in supporting growth and development in Greater Sudbury, overseeing Building Services through significant change and modernization, including co-chairing Council’s Development Liaison Advisory Committee (DLAC) since 1994. His contributions include guiding the implementation of the City's e-permitting system and advancing initiatives that improved service delivery for residents, builders and developers.
Following Mr. Mazza's retirement, the City is pleased to announce the appointment of Dave Gatien as Director of Building Services and Chief Building Official.
Mr. Gatien brings 25 years of experience in engineering and construction across the institutional, industrial, commercial and residential sectors. Since joining the City in 2025 as Deputy Chief Building Official, he has supported Building Services operations, service delivery and Ontario Building Code compliance. He has also played a key role in the integration of the City's e-permitting system and efforts to reduce the number of historical open building permits. Prior to joining the City, he was principal structural engineer and owner of Tall Pines Engineering Ltd. and previously held senior engineering roles with J.L. Richards & Associates Limited. A Greater Sudbury resident, Mr. Gatien holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo and is a licensed professional engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario.
"I want to thank Guido for his more than 33 years of dedicated service to the City and the lasting impact he has had on our organization, our community and the many projects he helped advance throughout his career," said Kris Longston, General Manager of Planning and Growth. "Guido's leadership has helped shape Building Services into the strong and responsive department it is today, and we wish him all the best in his retirement. As we look ahead, Dave brings strong leadership, extensive industry knowledge and a deep understanding of our organization. I am confident he will continue to build on the success of our Building Services team and support the needs of our growing community."
"It has been a privilege to serve the City of Greater Sudbury and our community for more than three decades," said Mazza. "I am proud of what our team has accomplished together and grateful for the support of Council, colleagues, industry partners and residents throughout my career. I have also been fortunate to work alongside dedicated and talented staff whose professionalism, expertise and commitment have made it possible to achieve so much for our community over the past 33 years. I am confident Building Services is well positioned for continued success and wish Dave and the team all the best."
"I am honoured to take on the role of Director of Building Services and Chief Building Official," said Gatien. "I look forward to working with Council, City staff, builders, developers and residents to support responsible development and ensure our community continues to grow in a safe and sustainable way."
Mr. Gatien will begin his new role on December 19, 2026, reporting to the General Manager of Planning and Growth.
