City Announces New Director of Engineering Services

The City of Greater Sudbury is pleased to announce the appointment of Drew MacDonald as Director of Engineering Services.

Following a recruitment process, Mr. MacDonald was selected for the role based on his extensive municipal engineering experience, strong leadership capabilities and demonstrated commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions that support the needs of the community.

A resident of Greater Sudbury, Mr. MacDonald brings more than 16 years of progressive experience in municipal engineering, asset management, capital planning and infrastructure operations. He began his career in engineering consulting and infrastructure inspection roles before advancing through senior positions in both the private and public sectors. Since joining the City of Greater Sudbury in 2019, he has served as Project Engineer with Engineering Services, Acting Manager of Linear Infrastructure Services Technical Support Services and most recently as Operations Engineer within Linear Infrastructure Services.

Throughout his career with the City, Mr. MacDonald has led the planning, design and delivery of major municipal infrastructure projects involving roads, water, wastewater and stormwater systems. He has played a key role in capital planning, asset management and operational leadership, while also supporting regulatory compliance, service delivery improvements and long-term infrastructure sustainability. His experience includes overseeing multidisciplinary teams, presenting reports to Council, engaging with the public and external stakeholders and serving in acting leadership roles, including Relieving Director of Engineering Services.

Mr. MacDonald holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from Lakehead University and is a licensed professional engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario. He also serves on the Greater Sudbury Source Protection Committee and has contributed to numerous City engineering standards, asset management and infrastructure planning initiatives throughout his career.

Mr. MacDonald begins his new role on August 24, 2026, reporting to the General Manager of Community Infrastructure.
