Charge Into Fire Safety During Fire Prevention Week

Greater Sudbury Fire Services invites residents to take part in Fire Prevention Week activities from October 4 to 10, 2026. This year's theme, Charge into Fire Safety, highlights simple everyday charging habits and storage and disposal practices that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safe.
Throughout the week, Greater Sudbury Fire Services will host a variety of public education and community outreach activities.
Kickoff Event
Greater Sudbury Fire Services is partnering with the Joe MacDonald Football League to kick off Fire Prevention Week with a family-friendly community event on Saturday, October 3, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the James Jerome Sports Complex. Olympic gold medalist Robert Esmie will participate in a ceremonial coin toss at the 1 p.m. game. The day will also feature:
• Fire trucks
• Information booth
• Sparky the Fire Dog
• Activities
• Opportunities to meet firefighters
Fire Hall Open Houses
Residents are invited to visit their local fire hall, tour fire trucks, meet firefighters and learn more about fire prevention and emergency preparedness.
• Waters Fire Hall: Monday, October 5 – 3 to 7 p.m.
• Coniston Fire Hall: Tuesday, October 6 – 3 to 7 p.m.
• Levack Fire Hall: Wednesday, October 7 – 3 to 7 p.m.
• Capreol Fire Hall: Thursday, October 8 – 3 to 7 p.m.
Community Outreach Booths
Fire prevention staff will be available at the following locations to answer questions and share safety information:
• Home Depot: Sunday, October 4 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• RONA (Marcus Drive): Friday, October 9 – 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries are found in cell phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters and power tools.
Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for residents of all ages to learn proper charging practices to prevent overheating, fires or explosions.
Charging Safely
• Use the charger that came with your device
• Charge devices on a hard, flat surface
• Never charge devices on beds, couches, pillows or other soft surfaces
• Unplug batteries once they are fully charged
• Plug chargers directly into a wall outlet whenever possible
Storage and Handling
• Store batteries in a dry location at room temperature
• Keep batteries away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures
• Do not charge batteries when temperatures are below 0°C or above 40°C
• Store spare batteries away from metal objects such as keys or coins
• Never place damaged or unwanted batteries in household garbage
• Bring used or damaged batteries to a hazardous waste depot or approved battery recycling location
"Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for residents to learn simple steps that can make a significant difference in preventing fires and protecting their families," said Fire Chief Robert Grimwood, Greater Sudbury Fire Services. "We encourage everyone to join us at one of our community events to learn more about lithium-ion battery safety and other important fire prevention practices."
