Make Your Voice Heard: Advance Voting October 22 and Election Day October 24

Oct 21, 2022

Monday, October 24 is Election Day for the 2022 Municipal and School Board Election. This will be your final day to cast your vote for Mayor, Ward Councillor and School Board Trustee.

Advance Voting

Advance paper ballot voting will be held at the following locations from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 22:

  • Centennial Community Centre & Arena
    4333 Centennial Drive, Hanmer
  • Chelmsford Community Centre & Arena
    215 Edward Avenue, Chelmsford
  • Tom Davies Square, Foyer
    200 Brady Street, Sudbury

If you plan to vote at Tom Davies Square, please note that parking downtown is free on weekends, including in the underground parking lot at Tom Davies Square. Signage will be posted downtown to direct you to parking options. You can also find a list and downloadable map of downtown parking options here: www.greatersudbury.ca/downtown-municipal-parking

Election Day

On Election Day, Monday October 24, there will be 27 voting locations open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. A list of voting locations was included with your Voter Information Letter (VIL), and can also be found here:  www.greatersudbury.ca/casting-your-ballot

The City uses a ‘vote anywhere’ method for paper ballot voting, which means you can attend whichever location is most accessible and convenient for you. Unlike voting in federal and provincial elections, you do not need to attend a specific voting location.

To make it even easier to get to a voting location, GOVA Transit will provide free service on all routes during voting hours on Monday, October 24. There will also be a free shuttle bus running from Cambrian College to NORCAT every 30 minutes, beginning at 10:05 a.m.

What You Need to Vote

If you are voting in person, either on Election Day or during advance voting, be sure to bring an acceptable piece of identification. For a list of options, visit www.greatersudbury.ca/elections/for-voters and click on ‘Acceptable Forms of Voting ID’.

To make the voting process faster, you should also bring your VIL that you received in the mail. If you did not receive a VIL, you can still vote. Just allow yourself a bit of extra time, as you will need to complete an ‘Application to Amend the Voters’ List’ form before you can cast your ballot.

Online Voting Continues

Online voting will also continue until 8 p.m. on Monday, October 24. To vote online, visit https://sudbury.secured.vote/

To vote online, voters must have a VIL, which contains a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN). Voters will use the PIN and their date of birth to access the online voting system.

If you did not receive a VIL in the mail, you can either:

  • Visit a Voter Registration Centre during regular business hours up until the close of voting on Election Day (October 24); or
  • Visit any in-person paper ballot voting location on October 22 or 24 to check your information on the voters’ list and make any updates, as outlined above.

Citizen Service Centres (CSCs), Libraries and the One-Stop Services counter at Tom Davies Square are designated as Voter Registration Centres during their regular operating hours until October 24. For a full list of CSC/Library locations and operating hours, visit www.sudburylibraries.ca.

Reminder about Duplicate VILs

It is possible for someone to receive more than one VIL in the mail. It is a violation of the Municipal Elections Act for a voter to vote more than once in a municipality, regardless of whether or not they receive more than one VIL, and it could result in fines or jail time.

If you receive more than one VIL, keep the one that most accurately matches your identification. Then take one of the following steps for the duplicate letter:

  • Dispose of it
  • Print ‘Duplicate – Return to Sender’ on it and drop it in any Canada Post mailbox
  • Bring it with you when you go to vote and give it to an election official, letting them know it’s a duplicate
  • Take it to any Voter Registration Centre during their regular business hours up until the close of voting on Election Day and let them know it’s a duplicate
