City's Corporate Security and By-law Services Division Goes Green

Sep 9, 2022

As part of the City of Greater Sudbury’s goal to become a net-zero community by 2050, the City’s Corporate Security and By-Law Services Division has made huge strides towards becoming a more environmentally friendly service.

This summer, two battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were added to its fleet, and a group of four Municipal Law Enforcement Officers (MLEO) were certified by the International Police Mountain Bike Association. Throughout the summer, MLEO could be found patrolling on bicycles to encourage safety and security in the downtown core, as well as in City parks.

“Enhancing active transportation is a key priority for the City, and this initiative is a prime example of how the right planning and infrastructure can allow us to change the way we operate while also reducing our carbon footprint,” said the Mayor of Greater Sudbury. “Going green is a partnership effort, and I want to thank our partners at the Greater Sudbury Police Service for their support in training our staff. Every small change across the organization makes a big difference in achieving our goal to be net-zero by 2050.”

Officers on bicycles typically make twice as many connections with the public than those in vehicle patrols, and are able to hear, see and analyze their surroundings more effectively. MLEO on bicycles can also reach terrain that isn’t accessible with a motorized vehicle.

This initiative directly supports the goals set out in the Community Energy and Emissions Plan (CEEP). For more information, visit www.greatersudbury.ca/netzero .
