2020 Canada Day Municipal Service Schedule

As the Canada Day holiday approaches, Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger reminds residents of the importance of following safe practices to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Canada Day will be celebrated a bit differently this year, but with the same sense of pride,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Bigger. “We are very fortunate to live in a country that safeguards its people and rallies to overcome any obstacle. I encourage residents to take part in the virtual celebrations organized by our local partners and volunteers to come together as a community, while safely remaining apart. I wish you and your families a very happy Canada Day.”

Virtual Canada Day celebrations include:

• The O Canada Project, featuring 100 local singers, premiering the morning of June 30 on the Young Sudbury Singer’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCiIGFp9KqI-XVAoP_A19uyA
• Sudbury Celebrates Canada Day Virtual Event on Wednesday, July 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Science North social media, the CTV Northern Ontario website and EastLink TV.

Holiday schedules will apply to the following municipal services on Wednesday, July 1, 2020:

• There will be no household waste collection on Canada Day, Wednesday, July 1. Residents who normally have waste collection on Wednesdays will instead receive waste collection on Saturday, July 4. Place waste at the roadside no later than 7 a.m. on Saturday for collection.
• There is no change to landfill and transfer station hours on Canada Day. There is no change to Recycling Centre hours on Canada Day; however, the Recycling Centre office remains closed to the public.
• GOVA Transit will follow holiday routes and schedules on Canada Day. Regular fares apply. For information, visit http://www.greatersudbury.ca/holidays or call 705-675-3333.
• The Greater Sudbury Animal Shelter will not accept appointments for visits on Canada Day. Residents who are interested in adopting a pet must call 311 to schedule a visit.
• To discourage the potential for large social gatherings, fireworks remain prohibited on municipal and private properties within the municipality of Greater Sudbury.
• Bonfires are permitted provided property owners are compliant with the City’s Open Air Burning Bylaw that specifies setbacks from structures and additional conditions.

As of June 12, the permitted size for a social gathering has increased from five people to 10. Physical distancing rules remain in effect and residents must stay two metres away from people who are not part of their household. To report violations, call 311.

Public Health recommends wearing a non-medical mask as an added step to protect others when physical distancing is challenging or not possible.
