Mikkola Road, Lively
Partial Road Closure Update
August 13, 2026
The City of Greater Sudbury is continuing to work closely with its geotechnical consultant to assess the slope failure on Mikkola Road and determine the safest and most cost-effective long-term solution. Based on the consultant’s findings, the roadway remains unsafe for vehicle traffic because the slope is unstable and there is a risk of further movement. For this reason, the road closure must remain in place.
City staff are reviewing possible repair options. Each option requires further technical review, cost analysis and consideration of environmental and property impacts before a final decision can be made.
Due to the complex nature of the work and the approvals required, vehicle access cannot be restored in 2026. Mikkola Road at this location is expected to remain closed through 2026 and into 2027, while the City works to select a preferred solution and considers funding through the 2027 Capital Budget process.
The City acknowledges the impact this closure has had on residents and understands the frustration and inconvenience it may cause. We sincerely appreciate your patience and support as we work to identify and implement a safe and lasting solution. Further updates will be provided later this year, as more information becomes available.
Residents can continue to access the area using alternate routes. Black Lake Road provides access to the traffic signals at the MR 55 and MR 24 intersection, while Kantola Road provides access to Highway 17. Aerial images highlighting the road closure and location can be found below.
