What Are Cenotaphs and Monuments?
Cenotaphs are memorials that honour those who have served or made sacrifices, often in military or public service, even when remains are not present. They are typically places of remembrance and ceremony.
Monuments are structures or installations created to commemorate people, events, cultural heritage or significant moments in the community’s history. They may recognize:
- Veterans and military service
- Cultural or Indigenous heritage
- Community leaders and pioneers
- Historical events or milestones
- Contributions that have shaped Greater Sudbury
Together, cenotaphs and monuments tell the story of our community and reflect the values we choose to honour publicly.
