Proposing a New Cenotaph or Monument
Requests for new cenotaphs and monuments on City-owned property are considered through the City’s community-led projects process. These projects are initiated and led by community groups, with the City providing guidance and oversight to ensure they meet municipal standards for safety, accessibility, design and long-term care.
Before starting, it is important to understand that:
- Projects must follow the City’s Community-Led Projects process
- City approval is required before fundraising or construction begins
- A formal agreement will be established to define responsibilities and long-term maintenance
- Professional design, engineering and permitting are part of the process
Community groups are responsible for:
- Leading the project
- Developing the design and plans
- Applying for building permit (if required)
- Securing funding
- Coordinating qualified contractors
The City is responsible for:
- Reviewing and approving proposals
- Ensuring safety, accessibility and regulatory compliance
- Supporting coordination with City departments
