Option 2 - Plea of Guilty – Submissions as to Penalty

By selecting this option, you choose to plead guilty before a Justice of the Peace and explain your circumstances.

To proceed with a guilty plea and make submissions regarding the penalty, you must select Option 2 – Plea of Guilty: Submissions as to Penalty. This can be done:

When appearing before the Justice of the Peace, you may request:

  • reduction in the amount of the fine; and/or
  • Additional time to pay the fine.

The Justice of the Peace will consider your request and make the final decision. Please ensure you have your offence notice (ticket) available when appearing before the Justice of the Peace.


Important Information
The Justice of the Peace CAN:

  • Reduce the amount of the set fine
  • Grant an extension of time to pay

The Justice of the Peace CANNOT:

  • Reduce or amend the charge itself (for example, a speeding charge of 20 km/h over the speed limit cannot be reduced to 10 km/h over the speed limit)
  • Remove, reduce, or alter any demerit points associated with the conviction

Demerit points are administered by the Ministry of Transportation upon conviction. The Court does not apply or administer demerit points.


If you wish to dispute the charge instead, please follow the instructions on your Offence Notice to request a trial under Option 3 – Trial.
