City Hosts Northeastern Ontario Municipal Conference

May 3, 2024

The City of Greater Sudbury is pleased to welcome more 250 delegates to town for the 2024 Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities Conference (FONOM). The annual conference, taking place at the Holiday Inn from May 6 to 8, is an occasion for all northern communities to gain valuable insight into municipal matters, while linking delegates with colleagues to share their experiences across the northeast region.

“I am very proud to host this year’s FONOM conference here in Greater Sudbury. The conference theme – Unlocking the North’s Potential – is one that resonates deeply with the goals and aspirations of our municipality,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre. “This conference plays a pivotal role in addressing challenges and seizing opportunities in our region, and is an excellent opportunity to learn from each other, exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions.”

The conference promises to be an enriching experience that will include mayors, councillors, and senior municipal staff from across Northeastern Ontario, as well as nearly 40 exhibitors and several notable sponsorships. Attendees can expect a comprehensive program comprised of workshops and information sessions covering diverse areas, such as power generation and transmission, safety on northern highways and addressing homelessness in the northeast.

The event will also include updates from the provincial and federal governments, with attendance by several members of the provincial government, Nickel Belt MP Serré and the leaders of the provincial Liberal and NDP parties.

“Their presence underscores the growing influence and significance of Northern Ontario,” commented FONOM President Danny Whalen. “It is a testament to the robustness of our membership.”

Featured prominently among the distinguished speakers is Alan Carter, the esteemed anchor of Global Toronto's flagship newscast, Global News at 5:30 and 6, and the host of Focus Ontario.
