City Discontinuing Blue Box Distribution

May 15, 2024

In advance of the provincial shift in responsibility for Blue Box system from municipalities to producers of the materials, the City of Greater Sudbury will end Blue Box distribution beginning May 24, 2024.

Under the new plan, producers will be fully responsible for the management and cost of the residential Blue Box program, including promotion and education, collection, processing and marketing of recyclable materials. The shift is intended to create a uniform recycling system across Ontario and incentivize packaging reduction and a change to more sustainable packaging. For Greater Sudbury, the shift in responsibility will begin April 1, 2025.

The change is part of the provincial government’s Blue Box regulation under the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016. Information about the legislation and change to producer responsibility can be found at: rpra.ca/programs/blue-box/.

The City of Greater Sudbury has been providing Blue Box services, including distribution of Blue Boxes to residential households since 1991. Over the last 10 years, the City has distributed over 160,000 Blue Boxes and subsidized over 16,000 Big Blues.

Changes:

Greater Sudbury residents who need new or replacement Blue Boxes will need to purchase them at retail stores.

When purchasing a new Blue Box from a retailer, please ensure that it is recycling blue in colour, has a recycling mobius loop label♻️ and that it conforms to the following requirements:

  • Must have a maximum capacity of 133 L (35 gallons), be no bigger than 60 cm by 95 cm (3’ by 2’) and with handles set above the midpoint on both sides of the container.
  • All approved recycling containers must not weigh more than 18 kg/40 pounds when full.
  • If your container has a lid, it must not be tied down. Our collectors must be able to easily remove the lid to collect your recycling.

Things that remain unchanged:

Residents who require the occasional use of an additional Blue Box may use a cardboard box or any box similar in size to a Blue Box placed at the roadside next an existing Blue Box.

Your collection day stays the same. Continue sorting your waste into garbage, recycling, organics and leaf and yard trimmings. The items accepted in the Blue Box remain unchanged. Green Cart organics, garbage, leaf and yard trimmings, and large furniture, appliances and electronics collection will continue as usual.
