City of Greater Sudbury Receives National Award for Financial Reporting

May 25, 2022

For the ninth consecutive year, the City of Greater Sudbury has been honoured for the development of an exceptional Annual Financial Report by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).

The City’s 2020 Annual Financial Report, for the year ending December 31, 2020, has been awarded the prestigious Canadian Award for Financial Reporting. This award recognizes the City of Greater Sudbury for its excellence in accounting with ongoing commitment to the spirit of full disclosure in financial reporting,

“This award is a significant accomplishment and a true testament to the hard work and dedication of City staff,” said the Mayor of Greater Sudbury. “It speaks volumes about the financial integrity of our organization and the ongoing commitment to innovation, openness and accountability. I would like to congratulate the staff team that contributed to the development of this essential annual document.”

The City of Greater Sudbury has a long history of being recognized for financial excellence. In addition to its nine GFOA awards for Financial Reporting, it has also received five consecutive GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards.

“This award reflects external validation on the quality and completeness of our reporting from a group of peers across North America, and I am very proud of the team that produced this document,” said City of Greater Sudbury Chief Administrative Officer Ed Archer. “Developing an annual financial report that tells our story in a transparent, accessible and engaging way is one of the many ways we work to build trust with residents and establish our City as a leader in municipal governance.”

The GFOA is a non-profit professional association serving nearly 18,000 government finance professionals in the United States and Canada. Its Canadian Award for Financial Reporting program was established to encourage municipal governments to publish high-quality financial reports and to provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing these reports. Reports are judged by a national review committee to meet the high standards of the program.
