Desjardins Donates to Therapeutic/Leisure Pool Fundraising Campaign

May 22, 2018

The community fundraising campaign for a combined Therapeutic/Leisure Pool at the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre is well underway with a $40,000 donation from the Sudbury area Desjardins. The Desjardins donation brings the community fundraising campaign balance to $145,000 of the $300,000 target.

“Being part of a cooperative financial group means we are joining forces with our communities so that together, we are stronger. Desjardins is proud to support this important community project,” said Jean Bisson, Executive Director at Caisse populaire Vermillon.

“On behalf of the fundraising committee and all residents who will benefit from the healing and comfort of this Therapeutic/Leisure Pool, I thank the Board of Directors and members of Desjardins for their most generous donation,” said Evelyn Dutrisac, Ward 4 Councillor and Chair of the Therapeutic/Leisure Pool Fundraising Committee.

“Today brings us one step closer to realizing a longstanding need in our community. The Therapeutic/Leisure Pool will be open to people of all ages, including older adults and children with special needs, without a doctor’s referral. It will support our city’s efforts to be age-friendly by helping people stay active and in their own homes for as long as possible.”

The Therapeutic Pool will be used by families, older adults and others with limited mobility for physical therapy and rehabilitation in warm water. The Leisure Pool will be used by families for swimming lessons and leisure activities.

Development of a Therapeutic/Leisure Pool at the Lionel E. Lalonde Centre in Azilda is identified as an action plan in the City of Greater Sudbury Parks, Open Space and Leisure Master Plan Review (2014). Greater Sudbury Council confirmed its support of the development in 2015 through a resolution that encourages fundraising and grant applications to construct the facility.

Under terms of the Council resolution, donations will be held in trust until the start of construction. More information is available at www.greatersudbury.ca/therapeuticpool .  Residents are invited to contact Evelyn Dutrisac at 705-665-6216 or 705-590-2297.
