Step 1: Are you eligible to run for and hold office?

An individual may run for municipal or school board office if they are eligible to vote in the election and fulfill all of the following requirements:

Mayor and Council

  • Is a resident of the municipality, a non-resident owner or tenant of land in the municipality or the spouse of such non-resident owner or tenant;
  • Is a Canadian citizen;
  • Is at least 18 years old;
  • Is not legally prohibited from voting; and
  • Is not disqualified by any legislation from holding municipal office.

School Board Trustees

  • Is a Canadian citizen;
  • Is at least 18 years of age;
  • Is a resident within the District School Board's area of jurisdiction and qualified to vote for members of that District School Board;
  • In the case of the Rainbow District School Board, is a public school elector;
  • In the case of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, is a separate school elector;
  • In the case of the Conseil scolaire public du Grand Nord de l'Ontario, is a public school elector who fits into one of the following criteria:
    • First learned and still understands French;
    • Received their elementary school instruction in Canada in French (this does not include French immersion or French as a second language); or
    • Whose children received, or are now receiving, elementary or secondary school instruction in Canada in French (this does not include French immersion or French as a second language).
  • In the case of the Conseil scolaire catholique du Nouvel-Ontario, is a separate school elector who meets one of the above criteria for French-language public school electors and who chooses to be a French-language separate school elector.

Candidates can only qualify for one District School Board seat. Candidates for the office of Trustee cannot change their school support after Nomination Day.

It is the responsibility of the candidate to determine whether or not they are eligible to run for and hold a municipal or school board office. The City of Greater Sudbury is not able to provide advice to those individuals who are proposing to run for office and encourages all potential candidates to review the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, as well as consult with their own independent legal counsel for more information with respect to candidate eligibility, obligations and responsibilities.
