Tuesday Council Meeting Goes Virtual

Mar 23, 2020

To ensure the practice of proper social distancing measures, and to help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 in the community, Tuesday’s City Council meeting will not be open for the public to attend in person.

Residents and media are encouraged to watch the meeting online at www.greatersudbury.ca/livestream or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GreaterSudbury. Eastlink Community TV also provides a broadcast of meetings. The Tuesday, March 24 regular Council meeting begins at 6 p.m.

On March 19, 2020, the Municipal Emergency Act, 2020, amending the Municipal Act, 2001, was passed by the provincial legislature. The amended legislation provides enhanced methods for members of municipal councils to meet electronically.

“I am grateful the Province has provided municipalities with the authority to hold virtual Council meetings,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger. “It is important citizens see us continue to be fully engaged in our roles, representing their best interests, and that key decisions are being made. As your elected representatives, we are leading by example, and we are taking the current situation very seriously. Taking this approach allows us to practise what we preach, and ensure we are adhering to the social distancing guidance advocated by Public Health Sudbury & Districts.”

In order to allow electronic meetings, each municipality is required to have a procedure by-law governing the calling, place and proceedings. A special meeting will take place preceding Tuesday’s City Council meeting to allow the necessary amendments to the current Procedure by-law.
