Statement from Mayor Bigger – Wednesday, April 1st, 2020

As we begin the month of April, I wanted to take a moment to commend everyone across Greater Sudbury who has been adapting, adjusting and seeing their way through this truly unprecedented time in our current history.

I have been speaking with our City staff, and there have been only a few minor  complaints about crowds and social distancing made to our 311 line. Out of 772 calls on Tuesday, only seven of them were submitted as crowd and social distancing cases.  We are all listening to the experts, and it is working.  Let’s keep it up.  Though we currently have 11 cases in our City, most of those are attributed to travel or those associated with the cases – though we must remain strong and smart when it comes to community transmission, the evidence shows we’re all working together, to stay apart – and that is making Greater Sudbury a safer place during this pandemic.  Let’s stick with it and stay the course.

As well, let’s also take this time to make sure we are being absolutely vigilant when it comes our seniors and older adults. The news from parts of the province about outbreaks in nursing homes is an alarm bell for all of us.  We have amazing staff working at the many nursing and senior’s homes and facilities across Greater Sudbury.  Let’s make sure we keep those residents and the hardworking staff safe. If you have a loved one residing in one of these places, please call often and stay in touch, that’s the best way to keep them safe while brightening their day. I too have ageing parents – I worry about them, so I can appreciate how so many of us feel being away at a time like this when we feel we should be doing just the opposite.

Lastly, I know we are all doing a lot walking.  I think it is just so great to see all the art work from kids decorating people’s windows and even Christmas lights that are plugged in at night.  It’s little things like that, that can make a big difference in how we all get through this outbreak.  If you have art to show off, put it on display.  If your lights are still up, plug them in.  We are Canada’s happiest city after all, let’s show out spirit as we pledge to get through this together.
